Convert NetCDF to CSV — No Code Required

NetCDF is the standard format for gridded climate data, and almost nothing outside scientific Python can open it. NetCDF Studio converts your archive into a flat CSV — one row per location per time step, one column per variable. Works with IMDAA, ERA5, CMIP6, AWS Open Data, ESGF, or any NetCDF file.

At a Glance

InputZIP of .nc files — any climate dataset in NetCDF-3 or NetCDF-4 format
OutputWide CSV — time, lat, lon plus one column per selected variable
CoordinatesHandles lat / latitude, lon / longitude, time / valid_time naming conventions
GridsRegular lat/lon grids; ascending or descending latitude; 0–360 and −180–180 longitude
CorrectionsOptional scientific modules — temperature, radiation, wind, soil moisture, FAO-56 ET
PROCESSING PIPELINE

How It Works

Three steps, fully automated. Transparent and reproducible.

01
Upload Archive

Upload a ZIP of your NetCDF files. NetCDF Studio extracts, validates coordinates, time axes, and available variables automatically.

02
Select & Correct

Pick the variables you need. Optionally enable correction modules — FAO-56 ET, unit conversions, radiation integration, wind normalisation.

03
Download CSV

Get a wide-format CSV — ISO 8601 timestamps, SI units, one row per location per time step. Opens directly in Excel, QGIS, Python and R.

FAQ

Common Questions

How do I convert a .nc file to CSV?
Upload a ZIP of your NetCDF files, pick the variables you want, and click Process. NetCDF Studio writes a CSV where every row is one time step at one grid cell, with your selected variables as columns.
Can I open NetCDF in Excel?
Not directly — Excel cannot read NetCDF. Converting to CSV first is the standard route, and CSV opens natively in Excel, Google Sheets, QGIS, ArcGIS, pandas and R.
Does converting NetCDF to CSV lose precision?
No. Values are written exactly as stored in the file. Unit conversions are only applied if you explicitly enable a correction module.
What climate datasets does NetCDF Studio support?
Any NetCDF file from any source. There are also guided workflows for IMDAA, ERA5, CMIP6, AWS Open Data and ESGF that handle source-specific download and naming automatically.
